Susan Preston, Chairperson, Managing Director, CalCEF Clean Energy Angel Fund
Susan is a world-recognized expert in angel financing and angel organizations. Susan has spent most of her career in senior management positions in public and private companies, from general counsel to CEO. She has also been a partner in two national law-firms and is a patent attorney. She was an Entrepreneur-in-Residence with the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation for 6 years and continues to serve as a consultant, specifically focusing on initiatives related to angel investing and angel organizations. Ms. Preston is the founder of Seraph Capital Forum, the first all-women's angel investment organization. Susan received her BS in Microbiology and Public Health from Washington State University and her JD from Seattle University School of Law.
Kenneth Nussbacher, Outside Board Member
From 1995 to 2000, Mr. Nussbacher was executive vice president of Affymetrix, Inc. and, from 1995 to 1997, he was also chief financial officer of Affymetrix. Prior to joining Affymetrix, Mr. Nussbacher was executive vice president for business and legal affairs of Affymax Research Institute. He received a B.S. from Cooper Union and a J.D. from Duke University.
Jerome Mattingly, PhD, Board Member
Jerry Mattingly has been involved with biotech for more than 20 years. He has worked in large multi-national corporations (Abbott Laboratories, Akzo Pharma, Litton Industries) as well as small start-ups. On the other side of the fence, Jerry has been involved with investment groups such as the New Mexico Angels, which he founded ran as the CEO. He has also worked with Tenex Greenhouse Ventures, KainCore Ventures., he was a member of the Board of Directors, President, CEO and co-Founder of Beacon Diagnostics, Inc., a company also involved with non-invasive diagnostic medical devices. Dr. Mattingly received his B.S. in Microbiology at the University of Illinois and his Ph.D. in Immunology at Notre Dame, spent three years at the Yale University School of Medicine as a post-doctoral associate in Cellular Immunology, and was on the faculty of The Ohio State University School of Medicine for five years. He has published over thirty papers in peer reviewed scientific journals and is the lead author of four patents.
Robert Blazej, PhD, Co-founder, President, Allopartis
Robert earned a BS in Molecular and Cell Biology and a PhD in Bioengineering, both from UC Berkeley. Robert has worked on genetics and genomics for more than 10 years, contributing to the canine, fly, and human genome projects before turning to development of the miniaturized DNA sequencing technologies that inspired Allopartis' core technologies.

Michael Borrus is the founding general partner of X/Seed Capital, a seed-focused early stage venture fund.
David Hanzel, PhD, General Partner, X/Seed Capital Management
David Hanzel has worked in scientific management positions at Molecular Devices, later Amersham Pharmacia, and most recently at Pacific Biosicences. A longtime inventor and pusher of technical boundaries, David brings a rare passion to X/Seed, hunting out promising technologies and helping to nurture them. David has a PhD from UC Berkeley.
